Why did I go with Alexa as my voice assistant?

I love my Amazon Alexa collection! We have one in each bedroom, one in the kitchen, in the theater room, an echo show in my office, and one in heidi's office, a mobile echo dot, and all 3 of my TVs have Fire TV devices with Alexa built in (2 sticks and a fire TV cube).  But I am not just an Amazon Fanboy. I have 3 Google Mini's,  a Google AIY voice kit (that one is my favorite, you should check it out), and have had a couple of Google Home Max speakers, and my daily driver phone is a Pixel 3 with Google Assistant.  I have an iPad, and an iMac, and have used Siri with all of those.  So why with so many devices have I settled on Alexa for the PHAT House?

First in case someone from Amazon reads this, what are my frustrations with Alexa?

  • The Echo show is great for video calls, but so is my phone. I don't think it was a good purchase for me, except that I might build a skill for it. Now the new Show Mode Dock for Fire tablets, I can get behind that!!!
  • The Fire Cube is far less functionality than an echo dot, and a fireTV stick, but more money, what gives?
  • There are several more integrations for Google (home automation, tools, text to speech announcements, et cetera).
  • Why can't I change your general voice to one of the polly voices...I really want to! and while we are at it can I change your wake word name to something custom, I want to call you Phoebe.

Google

Truth be told there was a critical moment in my smart home journey that the big G let me down.  When the Google Mini was released, I ordered several of them and a couple of Google Home Max speakers. I had 5 Alexa devices at the time, and this brought us to about the same number of Google devices.  But there was some pain with google.  I purchased a domain with google way back when you could get G-Suite for free. Since then they have monetized that service, and grandfathered the rest of us in.  The issue is that Google assistant can't access my calendar, so getting my reminders and events from Google is painful, but Alexa can do it fine (So can Siri). Additionally at the time Alexa was the only voice assistant that could be used as an intercom, and we have gotten a ton of use out of that feature. The final nail in the Google Assistant coffin was the pain and anguish of trying to set up the Home Max speakers with my entertainment system.  I was super stoked to get them and immediately took them down to set them up.  But there was a delay, and the video was painful to watch.  I played with it for days and was able to get some services working ok by delaying the video, but every service needed a different delay. The sound was pretty awesome, but not as good as the price I paid.  I sent them back after only 7 days of use and testing.

Siri

Siri really lost me when her directions were so bad...Apple you really let me down with your maps app.  If Siri could have used google maps back then, you might have had me at "hello" but I just couldn't be lost every time I ask you to take me somewhere.  That being said, my dad has automated most of his house, even several things I have not, and he uses Apple Home Kit and Siri for everything with great success!

Most of the big issues I had have been resolved.
  • Siri is better at directions, and with Apple home kit is a venerable rival.
  • Google has fixed the Bluetooth delay and allows calling now.
  • The Google Assistant still can't see my calendar or do its magic with my emails...because I use Google for those services.

In the end:

Amazon was ready when I was ready to buy, and Google still can't integrate with my email or calendar that they host, and Siri got me lost when I needed her most.
